Fixing Out Of Sync Audio On A TV

Doug in Christiana, Texas needs some help getting his TV to sync up

TV Viewing

Doug asked: “The sound on my TV set doesn’t always sync up with the video.  There’s enough of a delay in the sound to be a distraction. This may happen with DVDs, broadcast TV, and cable TV.  Is there a solution to adjust the synchronization of sound to video?”

The TV should take care of keeping everything synced on its own, so if you’re using just a TV and nothing else, it may be time to get in touch with the manufacturer and see what the problem is.

If you’re not using only a TV, but also some kind of sound system, things change. A home theater system or soundbar can cause delays in the audio, sometimes there’s no real fix for this, other than to disconnect them, but sometimes you’ll find options on your TV’s menu to deal with the issue.

To see if this is your problem, disconnect the speakers and see how your TV handles audio, there’s a good chance that the delay will disappear right away.

Look at your TVs audio options, the setting you’re looking for will probably be called “Audio Delay,” or “Audio Sync” and it will probably be measured in milliseconds. It may say something like “Audio Delay: 200ms.” If your TV has that setting, play around with it, you may be able to completely eliminate the problem without spending a penny.
