Weekend of January 4, 2019 – Hour 2

Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss Google getting permission to use sensors for 3D gestures, the growth is smartspeakers, potential new Apple products and forecast, Amazon’s cargo jets, Windows 10 finally passing Windows 7, Facebook year over year revenue growth, incorrect Google Maps data leading to issues for a police search, and more.

Chris in Jackson, Mississippi listens on SuperTalk 97.3 FM and  asked: “I am literally on the way to the store to get an HDMI cable to hook my computer up to my TV so I don’t have to see the ads on the YouTube app. It’s ridiculous how many ads there are on YouTube and the Internet in general. i am willing to pay an additional amount of money for an “ad-free” Internet in general. I don’t want to get youTube Red and then sign up for an ad-free version of every other app I use. I just wish there was an ad-free option in general.

Chris, you probably won’t ever get that. The internet is much larger than something like cable TV and getting everyone worldwide to negotiate how much money they want and collect it through your ISP is just not realistic.

Keep in mind that the traffic websites get is not comparable, and some have huge hosting costs and huge ad revenue to cover that.

You can also expect opposition to an idea like that from Google, Facebook, and all of the other “tech giants” that are really glorified ad agencies.

If you want to pay for ad-free, you probably won’t have a better option for the foreseeable future than to pay for the services you want one at a time.
