Gary in Alexandria, Louisiana asked: “I’d like to know if there’s been any research done on Instagram and its connection to Facebook. They just seem to manipulate relationships and pictures. I don’t know… it’s been a really weird eight months for me, I’ll tell ya.”
Well, Gary… Facebook paid 1 billion dollars in 2012 for Instagram.
Instagram’s own help site actually has an article entitled “Why do Facebook and Instagram share information?”
Part of what the article says is: “Sharing insights and information with Facebook helps us connect you with others and build a better day-to-day experience for the Instagram community” and “We can also let you know when a Facebook friend joins Instagram or suggest some of your Instagram contacts as People You May Know on Facebook.”
In other words, they share information to manipulate relationships to get you to use their site more…
Facebook recently replaced the Instagram leadership and doubled the number of ads on the platform as well, so you may not be having the greatest experience as a user these days.
A common topic of many articles is how Instagram is on track to dethrone Facebook as the largest social network, some say as soon as 2020, so you should expect some of Facebook’s worse practices to make their way to Instagram and it becomes the main money producer for Facebook, Inc.
