Steve in Baton Rouge, Louisiana listens on “Talk 107.3” WBRP and asked: “I’m familiar with Bluetooth devices and how they work. But I’d like to purchase a low-wattage FM transmitter to send a music signal to my FM receiver and speaker in a back room in my home from a music room located in the center of my house. Obviously, I want to do this wirelessly, saving the trouble of running speaker wire to the back room. Is there such a product that’s legal and affordable?”
Steve, you can buy whole home FM transmitters online for around $100.
There are far cheaper options, but keep in mind that those are not meant to be full-house, rather they’re just meant to carry signals a short distance (for example, for use within your car).
Whole home systems put out a stronger signal and may give you the coverage you need to reach your back room, but that will depend on your home itself. Powerful FM transmitters require a license, so these straddle the line between what is legal without a license and what is useful.
The legality issue is usually at least a little bit debatable, if it can be picked up outside your house, someone may not like it since it may cause interference with something else, but these devices are supposed to have a range of around 150 feet and are sold online as at least supposedly legal.
