Dan in Saint Johns, Michigan listens online and is calling via the Free IT App and asked: “I recently got a new Moto E smartphone and a new router. It’s a dual band router. The 5G gives me better speed but I noticed that the signal tends to drop in and out as I move through the house. Whereas the 2.4G has slower speed but tends to be more stable. I was wondering if you could elaborate a little bit about the advantages and disadvantages of these two different Wi-Fi bands, how they work and how I might go about improving my signal capabilities.”
Dan, it sounds like you figured out some of the advantages and disadvantages on your own already.
2.4Ghz carries a slower signal but the frequency is more resilient against obstacles, so it tends to be less affected by walls, trees, and so forth.
5Ghz frequency signals carry a faster connection at the expense of that resiliency against obstacles.
5Ghz signals have advantages against some types of interference from other electronics, but generally speaking the signal is more likely to deteriorate as you step farther from the wireless access point.
If you want to improve your 5Ghz signal and dont want to knock down any of your walls, your only real option is a wireless repeater or a WiFi mesh system that can boost the signal every now and then so it can get through the farthest walls.
Theres really nothing else you can do that will make it work more reliably.
