Health Tech: No-Contact Sensor for Heart Failure Patients

Healthcare is moving into the home, but this means that you have to keep closer track of patients with serious conditions. One company has a hands-off solution.

The pandemic accelerated the trend of taking healthcare out of the clinical settings of hospitals and doctors’ offices, and moving it into the home. Telehealth services and remote patient monitoring have become commonplace for many patients. But keeping track of patients with acute conditions requires a higher standard of performance, without using equipment that is inconvenient or intrusive for the patient. A company has created a sophisticated biosensor system specifically for congestive heart failure patients. The tabletop device does not need to be in physical contact with the patient, but uses infrared light instead to take measurements. The system can detect changes in a patient’s lung congestion with 91% accuracy. This means that the system can detect when a patient’s condition is deteriorating so that treatment can begin sooner, avoiding an ambulance ride and an expensive readmission to the hospital.
