Joe in Berkley, Michigan asked: “I have an old Windows 10 Computer and it cannot be updated because the system board can’t handle it. So I got another one which is the newest version of Windows, 11. I wanted to plug a hard drive into it, so I bought a dock station, put the hard drive in it, plugged in the USB, and I find that it cannot read all of the information. Is there a way I can boot to it, or how do I pull up the information from Windows 10 so I can pull all my files off and still use it?”
Joe, if you cant access certain folders or files, you may have to reclaim ownership of them under the user on the new computer, since theyre probably still owned by the user on the old machine.
To do that, right click on the folder, go to properties and then Advanced. Within Advanced you should be able to click on a Change button next to the current owner.
Make sure you check the box that says Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and apply.
After that, go back to the properties, under the Security tab click on Edit, then Add, and enter Users into the box, click OK, and then click on Full control and click ok again.
That should allow the users on the new computer to access your files.
If that fails, you can always put the drive back in the old computer and boot from it, and just copy the files over your network. It will take a little longer, but it should be easy.
