Tech News and Commentary
Dave and the team discuss the IACP conference, Best Buy stopping the sale of physical media, Twitter charging new users $1/year in some countries, self-healing smartphones coming to the market, HTC losing interest in Virtual Reality and Apple gaining it, and more.
David in Detroit, Michigan asked: Should I be using BitLocker on Windows 10? What are the pros and cons of it?
David, yes, you should be.
Bitlocker will provide whole disk encryption in the background without you having to do anything. To you that means that unless your user is logged in your data will be effectively unreadable.
If anyone tries to read your computer while its locked, or if anyone takes out your drive and tries to read it they wont be able to, or if you dispose of your computer with data still in the drive.
There arent any practical downsides, it happens in the background, theres technically some minor overhead but youll never notice it.
The only thing you may notice is the initial encryption of the whole drive, but after that your computer will feel the same as it does today and your data will be better protected.
If your computer includes a hardware component called a Trusted Platform Module version 1.2 or later your level of protection while the computer is turned off will be better, but even without it, theres no real downside to using Bitlocker to encrypt your drive and you should do it.
