Elsa in Fontana, Kansas asked: “I want to digitize my pictures and put them on a flash drive or something of that sort. But I want to write names on them or something. Is there any way possible of doing that?”

Elsa, when you say write names, do you mean on the picture itself, visibly over what is in the picture?

If thats the case, any photo editor will let you do that, even the one on your smartphone.

If youre thinking of writing names as you would write something in the back of old photos, then youre looking at image metadata and that youll have to rely on software that lets you search it unless you want to go by the photos one by one.

If thats what you want to do, both Windows and Apples Photos apps will let you not only tag your content but identify individuals so you can search for a person and bring up all of their photos.

The process is too old for them to pitch it as Ai, like they would now, but the software is usually smart enough to learn from a small amount of manual tagging and then be able to track a person through the years. Its especially impressive with children who are often identified correctly as they age without having to find tune the process manually to let the software know that its the same person in the picture.

The cloud services that mimic that software like for example, Google Photos, are also capable of the same functionality and have been for years so depending on what devices and services you use, you likely already have many free options to deal with what youre looking to do.
