Ted in Englewood, California asked: “I was curious as to whether Google was planning to implement AI into their Street View in Maps. Essentially I was thinking the idea behind it would be they would use AI to allow you to virtually drive a car through Street View instead of having to press the arrow to move when you’re looking at streets on the maps. I was thinking it would be cool if they used AI to make it seamless and it just kind of like lets you drive a car and it connects all the photos together like a video. I was just wondering if that was something you guys have herd of. I think it’s a cool idea. If they don’t have it yet maybe we should market it to Google.”
Ted, only Google can answer that but the answer is probably no.
People have been asking for that feature for years and there are even third party websites and code libraries that create a version of that, but Google doesnt seem interested.
Unless Google sees a way to monetize it, it may always be that way because its not an easy ask.
For example, right now when you use StreetView you may see a picture from last week on the screen, but when you move one step forward the picture may be from 10 years ago.
The obstacles on the road will be different, the car may avoid a parked truck in one picture, there may be a pedestrian crossing on another one, etc.
Fixing that would take a lot of work and a lot of money for which Google wouldnt really get anything other than the expectation that they will keep it working indefinitely.
For now, the closest youre going to get is websites like mapchannels.com or directions-driving.com but those wont provide a seamless experience they will still have the odd jumps that are inherent to StreetView.
