Here’s a surprising bit of history: In the year 1900, electric cars outnumbered gas-powered ones on the American road. The lead-acid auto battery of the time, designed by Thomas Edison, was expensive and had a range of only about 30 miles.  This week our science and technology reporter Ralph Bond tells us scientists are working on a new battery idea based on Edison’s research to improve his first car battery.
