“News Pick of the Week” with Ralph Bond

Today’s heart pacemakers can last 8 to 12 years before their batteries need replacement. This week our science and technology reporter Ralph Bond tells us there’s a new experimental pacemaker that works without a battery.

Norm in Broomfield, Colorado asked: “I just upgraded my routers to an Orbi 7 and I’m upgrading from Orbi 5, which evidently is discontinued from support, but now I’m having a real slowdown of my internet. Could it be I have too many devices trying to hook to the internet? I appreciate an answer on that. I currently have like 40 items, but that seemed to be no problem for my old router. Thanks.”

Norm, the Orbi 7 should be able to handle your 40 devices without slowing down noticeably.

The Orbi 7 should be able to work with up to 250 devices, but at that number you will see degraded performance. Still Netflix claims that it should be able to deliver 11gbps of speed to up to 100 concurrent devices.

Some people have noticed a degradation in performance after 50 or so devices, but even that is a good margin above your 40.

If the degradation is enough that you notice it, you may want to make sure your firmware is upgraded and that signal is good everywhere you need it.

If those two things are not the problem, then you may want to see if you can get a replacement while the hardware is under warranty. You may have just gotten a bad unit and a replacement may be all that cure you need.
