Tech News & Commentary

Jaime in Tampa, Florida listening via Zeno Radio asked: “I have an HD radio, my question is there any way to improve my reception so that i can get more stations?”

Your first option is to get a bigger, better antenna. If you’re listening from your home, you may be able to find an attic or rooftop antenna that would help boost your reception, like you would do with regular radio, or over the air TV.

If that doesn’t work or isn’t possible, you may also be able to find antenna pre-amps, that basically boost whatever the antenna is faintly picking up before it ever gets to the tuner, that may get you a few extra stations if you’re lucky, but depending on how weak the signals it amplifies are, you may not get much out of it.

HD radio is really the same old signals as before, just used in a better way, it’s not a new type of radio wave, so anything that would’ve amplified your radio reception before has the potential of amplifying your HD radio reception now.

Consumer Reports Feature With Jim Willcox

If a super high-priced 4K or OLED big screen TV doesn’t quite fit your budget, the new flagship plasma model from Panasonic might be the next best thing. Consumer Reports just got done testing one of them in their labs. Senior Editor Jim Willcox is here to tell us the highlights and the lowlights.

The “Into Tomorrow” team discussed the latest apps that they have been playing with recently.

• Samantha recommends: RetailMeNot, FREE

“One of my favorite go to apps that I have gotten Chris and Mandee addicted to as well is RetailMeNot. It is an app that allows you to open both online and in store coupons, show the code at the register and grab the extra savings. It also has a unique feature that automatically loads the most popular store discount codes when you are in the proximity of the mall. A cute cha-ching of that cash register sounds so you know there is added savings to be had. After you download the code you will be prompted to answer if the special worked or if you didn’t try it. Each coupon code comes with feedback of other users. The app is available for IOS and android users and the best part is it’s free! If I can save an additional 20% think of all the additional shopping I can do! Cha-ching!” — Samantha

• Marly recommends: Luminosity, FREE

“This week, I’ve been playing with Luminosity, an app used to improve your brain functions! It’s great to be able to improve your brain abilities by doing some bran workouts… it’s like the gym, in an app, for your brain! The purpose of Luminosity is to enhance memory, attention, and more. It creates a personalized training for your specific needs. There is currently a promotion, that with a two year program, you can pay $3.75 a month in order to have full access, which really isn’t bad considering all of the great benefits we can gain from the program. The app for your technological devices is FREE!! .”

Guest Segment:

Jason Merkoski, Author and former Technology Evangelist at Amazon

Jesse in Windale, North Carolina listening on NewsRadio680 WPTF asked: “I’m having trouble not receiving messages people are sending me. These are friends with normal e-mail addresses. For some reason they’re getting a message back saying that their message to me was Spam and it would not let it go through. Need to know what I can do to make that stop happening.”

Are all those people using the same email provider? If they are, it’s possible that the email server you use is classifying them as spam, maybe based on something that happened a while back. That probably wouldn’t happen if they were using big name email providers like Yahoo!, Microsoft or Google, but it may be happening with smaller ones.

As far as what you can do about that, what you can do is see if your email server allows you to “whitelist” addresses, whitelisting is just telling the server “I’m ok with this address sending me email, don’t bother checking their emails for spam.”

That should work for those friends that TELL YOU that their emails are getting bounced, but whitelisting is a one-address-at-a-time solution.

So if, for example, a contractor offered to email you an estimate you may still not get it because that contractor’s particular email address was not whitelisted as your friends’ addresses where.

Since this is happening with several different accounts that you’re aware of, you may want to get in touch with your email provider’s customer service and see if they can do anything for you, maybe they can whitelist a whole server at least for your own account, or review their blacklisting policies.

One final check we should ask you is, have you installed any kind of Internet security software on your computer? Say, Norton Internet Security? One of the options such programs will usually give is an email proxy where they check your inbox first, and get rid of anything they consider to be spam.
