Health Tech: High-Tech Mask Is Also High-Style

If you’re tired of wearing the same old same old mask when you go out, why not step up your game with a high tech mask designed by a music legend.

Masks have become a part of everyday life for many people, but the plain vanilla N95 can get a bit boring. Don’t despair, Honeywell has you covered, well, at least your face. The company partnered with music superstar will.i.am to create a high-tech face mask. The battery-powered device has dual 3-speed fans that force air through replaceable HEPA filters that can block bacteria and particulate pollutants. While the filters can’t stop a virus, most airborne viruses are suspended in liquid that the filters will trap. The FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the mask as a pandemic source control, though it does not qualify as personal protective equipment (PPE). But there’s more to the mask than just disease control. A Qualcomm chipset handles audio streaming for the built-in earbuds with Bluetooth wireless connectivity. A noise-cancelling microphone lets you make calls, and LED lights glow to give you that state-of-the-art look. And the battery is still rated to run for 7 hours. So now you can look hip without getting (or spreading) infections.
