National Cyber Security Month

October is National Cyber Security awareness month, are you doing everything you can to protect yourself online?

Each year the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) along with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA)  work together to promote cyber security with a special theme which for this year is #BeCyberSmart

This theme is meant to encourage individuals and organizations to own their role in protecting their part of cyberspace. It stresses personal accountability and the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cyber security.

Some of the things you can do to ensure your safety include creating strong passwords and using multi-factor authentication to get into your important accounts.

Updating your passwords frequently is a great idea as well.

Be careful of emails, texts and other online messages that come from people you don’t know and never click on a link you are unaware of as most hackers and phishing attacks will be allowed access once you do.

Be sure to always backup important data, documents, photos and anything else that you have available to you online so that if you are a victim of a cybersecurity attack you will at least have most of your information to be able to recover.

There are free security programs you can download to help keep you cyber safe or you can pay for some with specific security features and protections. Do a search to compare the different options and choose the one that best fits your security needs.
