Taking 360º pictures

Kevin in Tyler, Texas listens on KTBB asked us about 360º pictures

Photosphere

Kevin asked: “I really like the 360 degree videos360 degree videos. What I’m wanting to do, is do that with still images, not video. Can you tell me how to do that? Can I do it with a regular camera, or do I need a special 360 camera?”

There are dedicated cameras for that, and they do make the process much easier. However, you can just do that with your smartphone.

There are many apps that will make those 360 degree spheres for you, but the most notable one is Google’s own Photosphere. It’s available for iOS and Android, and it’s free, since Google wants you to share those pictures on Google Maps.

If you happen to have a Nexus phone, you don’t need the app, it will be built into the camera app.

If you want to explore what other options are out there, just search for photosphere, there are lots and lots you can choose from, like Sphere 360, but they’re all basically the same, some will let you frame a picture, take it and stitch it, some will work almost like video, but really the result is largely the same, and they have mostly fallen out of favor since Google introduced their version.
