Tech News & Commentary
Mike in Wyoming listens on Stitcher and is calling in via the App asked: “Samsung Galaxy S3 – I’m hard of hearing and unless I have my hearing aids in, I can’t hear it. Is there any way we can turn up the vibration so it vibrates more and I can feel it?” You aren’t the only one who feels the vibration level is a bit weak it’s apparently a common complaint about the Samsung Galaxy S3. Fortunately though the problem might be pretty simple to fix. If you go to settings you can change the vibration pattern setting your phone is currently on. The general consensus among Galaxy S3 users is that the strongest vibration tone is the Jingle Bells pattern. So simply pull up your menu bar, select settings and under device select sound then device vibration and voila! You’ll see the jingle bells vibration setting available. I’m willing to bet yours is currently set on basic call so just switch it to Jingle Bells and you’ll not only hear it but be super merry too! So give that a shot and let us know how it goes. If that doesn’t work, you might have to take it in to your local carrier store for a little tweaking. And we would be remiss if we didn’t ask you the obligatory “have you plugged it in” question. Vibration intensity on the GS3 IS adjustable through the Settings screen. Tap Settings, then Sound, then Vibration Intensity and make certain the slider for Incoming Call is all the way to the right. Consumer Reports Feature With Mike Gikas
You may think you know everything about using your smart phone, but there may be a few nuggets of wisdom that you haven’t come across yet. Consumer Reports Senior Editor Mike Gikas is here with some helpful tips. The “Into Tomorrow” team discussed the latest apps that they have been playing with recently. • Mark recommends: Magicka, $1.99
- “This one is for tablets only, I’m afraid, but the good news is that versions exist for both iPad and Android tablets, so it’s only you Windows dudes that are out in the cold. Magicka was one of my favorite cheap games for the PC, and I reviewed it well at one point on Into Gaming. Now there is a tablet version that is loads of fun. The game is based on Norse Mythology, but the entire thing is tongue-in-cheek, with HILARIOUS voice acting and funny quest text. You play a wizard, and you cast spells by combining elements. The results can be both epic and amusingly deadly (you don’t want to know what happens when you cast an electric spell after drenching yourself with water). It costs $1.99 for iPad and a very interesting $2.11 in the Google Play store. It’s spelled m-a-g-i-c-k-a and it is WELL worth a couple bucks!”

• Marly recommends: Mint, FREE
- “Do you have a MINT? I do! My favorite APP this week is called MINT – but it’s not peppermint candy … MINT is a handy way to keep track of your finances and it doesn’t cost a penny! MINT is a convenience way to have your monthly budget in your pocket – at the tip of your fingers, anytime, anywhere. Personally, this came in handy BIG TIME when I was trying to save money for my cruise vacations b/c it helped to keep track of my spending. The MINT app gathers all your financial information – from credit cards to bank account information, providing you with the most accurate, most up-to-date information about your finances. The Mint application is available for iOS and Android and best of all, it’s free!!”

Good luck!!! Mike in Montrose, Colorado listens to “The Voice of the Valley” 580 KUBC asked: “I have a no contract phone with wal-mart on straight talk. I have the Samsung Proclaim. Now I’m looking to upgrade but Wal-Mart has pulled out all the Samsungs. I was wondering what phone should I get between the: Samsung S2, S3, or the Microsoft Phone?” That’s an easy choice: Of the ones you mentioned, I’d have to say the Samsung Galaxy S3. There’s really no contest, the S2 is a good phone but not as good as the S3, the Windows phones are miles behind. If you really want to save some money, the S2 will probably be free — or VERY inexpensive — and it is certainly a good phone, just an older good phone, but unless you really don’t want to spend the extra money, absolutely go for the S3, it’s by far the best option.
