Tech News & Commentary

Scott from Howard, Pennsylvania listening via 103FM WRSC Happy Valley’s Place to Visit asked: “I have an iPod nano 5th gen and I’m having a problem with the phone jack (Assuming he means headphone jack), and for the price to get it fixed i’m thinking about upgrading to the new Nano or iPod Touch. I’m not sure which would have the best features and be the best to invest in. I want it to have an FM radio cause that’s how I listen to you guys. Please give me some info and recommendations. Also, you guys have a great show and I enjoy listening to you guys every Sunday.”

We would definitely recommend the newer iPod Nano since you are already familiar with its functionality! It still has the FM radio that interests you! The radio feature even lets you pause or rewind up to 15 minutes, so you never have to miss anything from our show!

The iPod Touch may be another option for you to look into Scott. It’s a lot more powerful in every way, bigger screen, better processor and RAM, the ability to run far more apps, two cameras, but it will not pick up FM radio over the air, if you want to listen to radio broadcasts you will need to use an app.

That part is easy enough, iHeartRadio and TuneIn have lots of local stations, the problem is that, for them to work, you need internet access, which in the iPod’s case means WiFi.  The Nano just picks up FM signals the same way any other radio would, if FM is a big deal to you then the Nano is for you, if you don’t mind getting your radio through your internet connection and don’t mind a larger size, the Touch is a more capable device.

Perhaps the best way to think of it is this: The iPod Touch is an iPhone without the phone part, while the iPod Nano is an iPod. For that reason, you might want to go with the Nano, unless you already have an iPhone. It would be unpleasant to have to buy apps for both iOS and Android (assuming that you have an Android smartphone). If you already had an iPhone, there would be no need to buy an iPod Touch, because everything the Touch would do your iPhone already does.

• Mark recommends: NOAA Weather Radar, FREE

“NOAA Weather Radar from Tap Nation. One of the things I dislike most about living in Florida is wondering when the rain will stop. I wanted a handy app on my smartphone that would figure out where I was and show me the current radar around my area. NOAA Weather Radar does that, and does it beautifully. It animates the radar images so you can see not only where the rain IS, but where it’s GOING as well. You can zoom in or out to see as much or as little detail as you like. NOAA Weather Radar does have a Pro version that skips the ads, but the ads don’t bother me, nor does the pop up asking me to go Pro every time I start the app. I saw some reviewers complaining about these things, but that just proves that people are whiners. NOAA Weather Radar is free in the iTunes app store.”

Jack from Brooklyn, New York listening via the Android App asked: “I have some rage, its about the [Into Tomorrow] app. many times when I press the listen button it appears not to connect and instead of saying stop it goes back to listen, so I press it again. What happens is, it connects and I hear the show playing twice, a couple of seconds apart. So if i press the stop button it stops one of them. I can’t stop the other one because the button doesn’t say stop, it says listen. The only way to stop the radio is shut off my phone or force close the app. I have a fix though, please put an exit button on the app. I hpe you take this eriously because its really annoying, thanks. ”

This was a problem a while back but we thought it had been fixed long ago, we would love to look into it further and see if some specific phones are still having this issue. Call us back and let us know what phone model you’re using so we can find a fix that will include it?

Thank you, Jack!

Dan in Fort Lauderdale, Florida listens via the App asked: “Comment: I love windows xp and I’m not changing. Microsoft should go back to the roots of XP.”

We’re not willing to go that far with you, Dan, but we will say that we were perfectly happy with Windows 7 and we can’t see a reason to upgrade to touch-centric Windows 8.

There are a lot of things we prefer about Windows 7 over Windows XP, so we’re curious what it is that makes you such an XP diehard? Call back and let us know!

I just ordered three new laptops and a desktop for work and while I was, just barely, able to get Windows 7 on the laptops, I had to pay EXTRA to get Windows 7 on the desktop computer. Perhaps that’s the purpose of Windows 8? It allows computer makers like Dell to get a little extra for the older operating system?
