Tech News & Commentary

Mark in Richmond, Kentucky asked: “I have a Pentium 4 hyperthreaded Desktop. I want to know, if I buy a motherboard with a Core 2 processor, will that speed up my computer enough to make it worth while to spend the $150 or so on the motherboard and processor?”

It will speed up your computer, but what other changes do you need to make to it? are you going to need to add more RAM? or get a bigger hard drive? If you need to add extra components or replace some old ones, you’ll end up spending around the same a new entry level desktop would cost you. The entry level desktop would have the advantage of coming with all new more modern components.

Ultimately, you’d be replacing an obsolete processor with newer also obsolete processor, so you may be better of saving the money until you can get a new system.

Consumer Reports with Donna Tapellini

When it comes to mobile computing, tablets have largely taken over the space once occupied by netbooks. But, manufacturers aren’t giving up on them just yet. Consumer Reports Senior Electronics editor Donna Tapellini is here to tell us if the new Asus Eee PC Flare netbook is worth considering.

The “Into Tomorrow” team discussed the latest apps that they
have been playing with recently.

For Android:

• Mark recommends: Stupid Zombies, FREE

Stupid Zombies

“It’s Angry Birds…WITH ZOMBIES.” – Mark

For iOS:

• Chris recommends: Jenga HD, $0.99

Jenga HD

“One of my favorite games from years ago was Jenga. Now it has come to the iPad. If you’re not familiar with Jenga (and who isn’t??) you have a stack of bricks. The object is to remove the bricks one by one and place it on top, without the entire stack toppling over. Whoever makes the stack fall, loses. The iPad app is really cool. The physics of the bricks is very close to real life. They actually react to your touch as you would expect them to. You can not only play locally with someone by passing the iPad back and forth, but you can also connect and play against people online. Jenga HD is available for 99 cents.”

Jack in Wyndham, New York listens online asked: “What’s available on 3D videos that are video streamed? I have a Vizio 42-inch 3D TV coming in soon. I want to know what 3D content is available through streaminG — whether it’s Netflix, Hulu or whatever you recommend.”

As far as we know Hulu isn’t streaming any 3D content yet, Netflix isn’t either but will be “soon” — what soon means to them hasn’t been made clear though.

If you want streaming 3D content today, the only option that we know of is Vudu. They’re only starting out, and their 3D catalog isn’t huge yet, but they’re up and running today.

Some TV manufacturers are also running their own 3D content streaming services. Sony, Samsung and others have them up and running now, but we haven’t heard of Vizio doing that yet.
