When should you upgrade your external hard drive to a newer model with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3? These are the fastest interfaces around today and in most cases, will save you time when moving files or performing your daily backup. To get the most out of TB-3 or USB-C, your system must have those ports available. However, USBC and TB3 use the same connector, called Type C. Some manufacturers provide a cable in the box to allow connection to the older systems. Just check the box contents.
