“This Week in Tech History” Weekly Feature with Chris Graveline

Jeff in North Carolina listening via Tune-In Radio asked: “You know that theres a lot of devices out there (I think this is what he says next) for external batteries for phones like android and iOS. What I don’t find are a lot of devices for the iPhone 5 with lightning adapter. Can you tell me what would be some good pocket size external batteries that have the lightning adapter?”

Well Jeff, there’s the Mophie Juice pack range of external batteries, they have three models, the Helium which has a 1500mAh battery, the Air, 1700, and the Plus, that holds a 2100mAh battery. They all fit into the iPhone 5 with the lightening connector and range from $80 to $120

There are other brands of battery packs like the Lenmar iPhone 5 battery charger that can run up to 13 hours of extra talk time and retails for about $80.

If you don’t specifically want a case and will settle for a regular battery pack, Zagg has many Spaq models and some of them are comfortably pocketable and may meet your needs. Their prices start at $39.99.

Tom in Columbus, Ohio asked: “I teach at a middle school. In the morning kids come in and would like to play music as they enter homeroom. What I’m looking for is an iApp that could start a playlist at a specified time. Now here’s the trick, it needs to start to the nearest second. I know its easy to find one to the nearest minute, but i gotta have it to the nearest second because at the time the last song finishes and the tardy bell rings. Please Help me.”

Tom, we actually haven’t found any apps that can start a playlist with that level of accuracy…

We’re sorry to have to tell you this, but you might have to either do it manually, or get some kind of dedicated device other than your smartphone to do it.

This would be a great time for our listeners to chime in… do you know something we don’t? Are there any apps out there that do what Tom needs? Let us know at 1-800-899-4686.

If what you’re looking for is something that can START playing a song at a specific time, and the “to the second” can be the start of any given minute, why not look at some of the alarm apps that can play songs from your iTunes library. Two that come to mind are Playlist Alarm Clock and AlarmTunes. Both cost around a buck, and both will let you set an alarm that begins playing music rather than an alarm sound.

We asked: “The NEXT iPhone… Wait, iPhones!
It looks like the new fruits from the #?Apple farm will be announced September 10th. It has been speculated that the Cupertino company have been working on two iPhones, one cheaper version, maybe with a plastic casing and some low-end features, and another one will all of the new shiny bells and whistles.

As far as specs go, what would YOU like in the next #?iPhone ? Would you settle for a cheaper version that hasn’t got all of the latest features? How much do you think a cheaper version in plastic with less features should cost?
asked: “I have a Mac, but i believe that Apple needs to do a better job. I want to know what is Apple doing to make their system more Business friendly, as in what they are doing to make their devices work better together, iPads iPhones and Macs.”

Bill in Erie, Pennsylvania Posted a Comment saying: I would like to see one about the size of the Samsung. On another note I recently contacted Verizon and complained that my iPhone 4S Internet connection was slowing down. I was told that they were putting all they’re time with 4G and were abandoning work with 3G. In effect the were abandoning us that use 3G. And by they way, they said I am now eligible to pay mega bucks for a new phone. Of course my unlimited, which was grandfathered in would go away. My phone will continue to get slower and slower until I’ll be forced out of unlimited usage. The representative said “don’t shoot the messenger”! he was only being honest! Good old Verizon!

Verizon Wireless commented :

We’re not sure exactly where he got the info but it’s not correct, the fact is that Verizon’s 3G Network is faster and stronger than ever […] The company spent years and 10’s of Billions of Dollars to create the nation’s largest and most reliable network 3G network. They’re many factors that might import the performance of the particular handset, so we don’t want to speculate what they are here, but it’s definitely not a 3G network issue. We’re very excited about 4G LTE of course because it’s incredibly powerful and fast but we’re still committed to maintain the best 3G service for the millions of customers that rely on it. Se we hope that helps, thanks to Bill and his interest.

Matthew from Boston, Massachusetts Replied: Bill sprint has unlimited everything for 89 bucks a month. 4G LTE inc. less if your company offers discount.

Jake in Pana, Illinois Posted a Comment saying: Two versions of iPhone 6 coming out this fall: a cheap version and one with all the bells and whistles.
Makes me glad I’m part of the Android Nation. If I really wanted to upgrade my phone, I’ll just upgrade the Android version – my phone, originally under the 2.3.5. Gingerbread API version, is rocking 4.3 Jelly Bean. Helps to root the phone.)

Mark Replied: Android stinks and is buggy. I have never had an android phone that after 6 months didn’t begin to have problems.

Dakota from Fayetteville, Arkansas Replied: Android 4 Life!

Jake from Pana, Illinois closed things with: 2 years now with Android. No bugs. Runs faster with almost all of Google’s junk off the phone. Rooted phones perform even faster.
