Lex in Louisiana listens on 710 KEEL and used our free App to participate and asked: “My mother in law, who is 91 years old, lives in the house with my wife and I. We don’t want to put her in a nursing home but we’ve tried First Alert devices and other types of emergency alert devices and she loses them or breaks them. But she always keeps up with her Apple iPhone. I was wondering if there was an app or some way to get that iPhone to emulate or be a First Alert type device.”

Lex, yes there are ways but it wont be very reliable if youre worried about things like falls.

There are lots of apps like FallSafety or even CVS health symphony that will try to track activities and falls, but an iPhone is far more likely to sit on a table than a wearable is, and it wont detect things like falls if its sitting on a table.

CVS version reports movement in general, so you could always check in on her if she hasnt moved in a while to see if shes ok and just left the phone somewhere.

The emergency call side of it is obviously easier, she can just say hey Siri, call my daughter and shell reach your wife.

If she is open to an Apple Watch, it will have fall detection and emergency calling built in, and it will be far more reliable since its a wearable device that shes less likely to leave behind than a phone, and for example, if she happened to be cooking and slipped and fell, the phone may be sitting on the counter, but the watch will still be attached to her and detect the fall.
