Tech News & Commentary

The “Into Tomorrow” team discussed the latest apps that they have been playing with recently.

• Mark recommends: Day One, $4.99

“The app I’ve been testing out this week is Day One. Have you ever wanted to keep a journal? You want to record your thoughts each day, but you can’t figure out when, where, and how to do it, or more commonly, you just FORGET to do it? Day One helps avoid the regrets. This unique app creates a journal for you, backed up and synchronized between devices using Dropbox or iCloud, and optionally nags, err..reminds you to write in it. You can snap a photo to go with your journal entries, and the app automatically records the date, time, location, weather, and using the motion sensor tries to capture your activity at the time of the posting. It’s clever enough to make it just that little bit easier to write in a journal, and it just might be what gets you over the top in creating the habit. Day One costs $4.99 in the iTunes App Store, but I did get mine free as an App of the Week through Starbucks (full disclosure).” — Mark

• Chris recommends: Timehop, FREE

“If you like to live in the past, Timehop is for you! This app syncs with your phones photos and links to your social media accounts to show you what you posted on that same day a year, two years, three years ago, and so on. They say it’ll replay your past, one day at a time. Now, a lot of us would like to forget the past, thank you. Luckily, Timehop is free. However, the possible therapy that may be needed after having to relive some of those moments all over again, is not. ” — Chris

Guest Segment:

Dr. Eric Branda, Sr. Product Manager – Siemens Hearing Instruments
pioneer and trendsetter in the development of hearing aids

Sharon in Nashville, Tennessee listening on WTN 99.7 FM asked us: “I have an iPhone and I have some recording of a friend of mine that has passed away. I’m trying to get these recording that are stored on my voicemail. I was wondering if there is any way I can get it off my voicemail.”

Sharon, There are several ways this could be done. One route you can take is, iMazing. iMazing is a file manager that can be used with iPads, iPhones, and iPods to transfer any file or media to a computer or to a new device. It does not require iTunes, iCloud, or even a jailbroken device. The program can be found on iMazing.com.

Another program you can use is “iExplorer”, which is also a file manager intended for the same purpose as iMazing.

If you still are having some trouble exporting your voicemails to your PC, you can try connecting a 3.5mm audio cable to the head-phone jack on your iPhone and to your computer’s mic jack.  Download a software  such as “Audacity”, an audio editor and recorder, and simply click record and play your voicemail from your iPhone.

Your iPhone’s voicemails are backed up to iTunes whenever you make a backup of your phone, and while nothing we’ve recommended to you should cause your voicemails to be deleted, it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially when dealing with such important voicemails. So please, make a good backup of your phone before you begin this process.

Victor in Buffalo, Missouri listens via TuneIn asked us: “Hello Dave, I’m soon going to have a Go Pro camera, thats suppose to be plus 3, so I know they don’t come with micro SD card? Help? I looked online for something. They have HD, Ultra HD, faster, better gooder. What do I actually need for a Go Pro that can record in 4k?”

Victor, There is only one GoPro that will record 4K video, the $399 Hero3+ Black Edition, the Hero3+ Silver won’t work, it has to be the Black Edition.

If you buy that camera you will have to buy the SD card, but other than that you don’t need anything else. The camera will come with it’s own case and whatever else you decide to get will hinge more on your intended use than anything else.

You can get an external screen, or an external battery pack, or one of the many mounts that they offer, but all of it is optional and you don’t need any of it to use the camera.
