Tech News & Commentary

Scott in Nashville, Tennessee asked: “I have a Zune MP3 player. I have all my CDs that I did by hand, probably 100 or more CDS, downloaded to zune.com. Now my wife got an iPod and I have to transfer them over. Is there a way for me to do it just through Zune or where I need to transfer them to get them without having two programs running because it’s taking up a lot of space.”

Not surprisingly, Apple and Microsoft have not made it easy to transfer music between their devices.

If you already have the Zune’s music on your computer, you can make iTunes grab it from the directory it’s in, instead of duplicating files, but you will need to use something as a middleman between the Zune and the iPod.

To make sure files are not duplicated, you can go to iTunes’s settings and make sure that “copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library” is NOT selected.

Also, keep in mind that Zunes and iPods both play MP3s but there are some formats that each use that the other can’t understand, if you happened to rip your music in WMA before putting it on your Zune, for example, you may have to convert everything before your iPod will be able to play it, iTunes will probably be able to do it for you, but there’s no way around duplicating files in that case.

Other than that there isn’t much you can do, sadly we haven’t found another way to just plug the iPod and the Zune in and have the music transfer from one to the other.

“Into

Gaming Update” Weekly Feature, this week, with Iggy

Terry in Joplin, Missouri listens to the Podcast and is calling in via the App asked: “I purchased a Nexus 7 and I purchased a case with it. It got to where after a few minutes the screen would go blank like it was going to sleep. You tap the power button and it would come back on for a second and flash off. It would do it repeatedly. You take it our of the case and it would work just fine. Little confused. Need a case for it but I don’t know what is causing the problem.

Also – Looking for a good set of earbuds. Not real expensive but something that is comfortable to wear. I can’t wear an over the head headset and some earbuds just aren’t comfortable. Can you suggest something that gives good audio quality?”

It sound like your case is blocking the ambient light sensor. Most tablets and smartphones have an ambient light sensor for the purpose of keeping the light as it needs to be for you to read it comfortably in the room you’re in, while at the same time keeping it as dim as it can go as not to waste battery life (or hurt your eyes).

If your case is blocking that sensor, there’s a decent chance your tablet won’t know any better, it will just assume that you’re in a very dark room and lower the brightness to conserve both battery life and your retinas.

You’re best bet is to buy a new case that has a hole over the sensor to let light in.

As for the earbuds, that really depends on what you want to spend. The Sennheiser MM 70i is a great pair of earphones from experience. They provide a great amount of low and high levels. They are very comfortable with a variety of changeable earbuds to adapt to your ear. And retail for less than $70.

Also a few of us here, use the Yurbuds. They are designed to stay in your ear no matter what you are doing, especially during exercise, and they sound pretty good, considering the price. You can pick up a pair of the yurbuds from 30 to around 100 bucks depending on which pair you choose.

Joe from Orange County, California listens via the iPhone App asked: “Is there a way to rapidly charge my iphone 5? And is there individual device or apps I can use to boost my LTE signal at work ? Thanks Dave and the gang !!! Sent from my iPhone”

There’s no way you can charge your iPhone faster.

An iPhone 5 will pull 5W of power or less from the charger, you can’t force it to take more, it does feature the same fast charging many electronics do these days, so it will charge most of the battery within an hour before switching to a trickle charge mode to complete the rest.

You also can’t boost your LTE signal using apps, but you can boost it using physical repeaters. Both Wilson and Wi-Ex make signal boosters, Wilson’s Sleek 4G may work for you, most of your other options will be permanent installations, so depending on whether or not you can get away with doing that at work, you can look into options like a Wi-Ex Soho as well.

Some people will tell you that if you use the 10W charger from an iPad to charge your iPhone, it charges twice as fast. Perhaps you heard that and it prompted your question. In fact, that’s not true. The iPhone won’t draw more than 5 watts. What IS true is that if you use an iPhone 5W charger with your iPad, it wont charge but it WILL allow you to use your ipad without decreasing the battery level. You might be able to win a bar bet with this bit of trivia. If so, you’re welcome. We’re glad to be of service.

IFA History Feature

“IFA History Feature” brought to you by Messe-Berlin

In 1936 at the Olympic Games in Berlin, the first electronic camera was tested, named “television cannon”. The cameraman was Dr. Walter Bruch himself, who had co-developed the giant machine. The lens alone weight about 100 pounds, and the whole camera was 2 ½ yards long. The images were received in 28 “television parlors”. As this was deemed insufficient, another technology during the games saw a world’s first: the projection onto big screens. Two halls were equipped with TV projection. More than 100.000 people watched the Olympics on the big screens, and another 50.000 in the TV parlors.

Thinks we can improve the show by: I would like to see a section on the website on how the various products can be incorporated into education.

Comments about the show: I love the fact that you are able to get those that create the various apps, electronics and other pieces of technology onto the show so that they can provide a inside look at what is being developed. The videos that are published have also been a good resource for me as an educator. My middle school students enjoy watching many of the videos that highlight the new technologies that are coming out.

Reason for wanting to travel: I could incorporate much of what I see and learn at IFA into the middle school technology education courses that I teach.

Nick in Decatur, Illinois listens on 100.9 WZUS asked: “I have an ASUS EEE Netbook. Several months ago it began to freeze then it crashed. I was able to revive it but now it runs real slow. Is there anything I can do to make it faster like replace the RAM or is it time to buy a new laptop?”

Yes. It is always time to buy a new laptop.

But seriously Nick, the first thing I would do is indeed confirm that it isn’t just that your RAM module is fried and replace it. I would also consider the possibility that you have malicious programs running so you might want to run a diagnostics on it.

It’s also important to remember that the Netbook is not built to be used like a normal laptop so if the operator is using it with that expectation you could be indeliberately running too many programs or maxing out it’s Intel Atom processor capacity in some way which will cause sluggish performance.
