Tech News and Commentary
Dave and the team discuss Windows 12 development, Walmart’s e-commerce troubles, AT&T’s new 5G radios, Ford and EVs, Waymo being allowed to keep details about their vehicle secret, Samsung branded stores, cashierless Whole Foods, new drinks from Pepsi, Dubai’s Museum of the Future, and more.
Peter in San Francisco, listens on TuneIn and is participating with the AskDave button on our site and asked: “I’m having a new computer built and the builder suggests that he clone my existing boot drive over to the new computer, so that I can just turn the new computer on and be ready to go. I haven’t really heard of that before. Is that something that you would suggest?”
Peter, if you want to keep your same files and settings then yes, its a very useful thing to do.
Basically youd be turning on a new computer with new hardware that would look like the old one and have all the files and most of the software that the old one did.
That means that there would be next to no setup for you after you get the new machine, everything would already be ready to use and set up like you had it before.
Obviously, if youd prefer to take this as an opportunity to clean out your digital life and get rid of old junk, then that option isnt for you and you might benefit from starting out with a clean slate, but most people prefer to not have to bother moving all of their files and software manually if they can help it.
So, generally speaking, yes, thats something wed suggest taking them up on.
