“News Pick of the Week” with Ralph Bond

The United States generates roughly 390 terawatt hours of electricity from solar power per year from both solar farms and small scale rooftop systems. This week Ralph Bond tells us scientists have discovered an ingenious way to make solar panels produce electricity even at night!

Jason in West Palm Beach, Florida asked: “I’m looking for a recommendation for an android auto compatible app that will provide me some active audio alerts when I sort of accidentally exceed the speed limit. I know some apps show the current limit visually, but I want one that has alerts I can hear, ideally with a set threshold, so I can keep my eyes on the road. Do you have a favorite that balances accuracy and low distraction? My car doesn’t have the heads up display like the one you mentioned last week on the show, the MDX.”

Jason, you have some options to get what you want.

If you want a minimal app without too many disruptions you can look at something like Velociraptor.

Velociraptor will just display a map, the speed limit, and optionally alert you when you reach it.

You can also try Maps Speed Limits & Alerts, which as you may have gathered from the name will show you maps, cache them for quicker retrieval if your signal is not great, and show you the speed limit and alert you if you go over it.

Both of those are nice and simple, not too much to distract you, not too many features you dont need, pretty much the simplest version of what youre looking for you can get.

For a less simple version, Waze can alert you when you go over the speed limit plus whatever tolerance you set for it.

Waze is a Google property though, so it comes with some of the usual Google distractions. It will show you ads, that kind of thing.

Other than that, it works well and it will also alert you of nearby speedtraps and hazards, if thats something youre interested in.
