 Tech News & Commentary

Rickey in Woodlands, Texas listens and is calling in via the iPhone App asked: “What kind of LTE booster would you recommend for a 1500 sqft apartment? How easy are they to install? and, how expensive do they run?”

Well, there are a couple ways you can go with this. It really depends on whether you want a solution for a single device, or whether you want to boost the signal for an entire building.

At the device level, Wilson Electronics makes the Slick 4G-V cradle for Verizon LTE networks. This $130 mobile booster is designed for use in vehicles, but there is an optional indoor kit that will let it work with your smartphone or wi-fi hotspot inside a building. Wilson is coming out with “A” and “C” models for the AT&T and Sprint networks in the future, but right now Verizon LTE is the only one supported. The Slick will boost 2G and 3G signals as well, however.

If you’re looking more at a whole building solution, then you could check out CellAntenna’s CAE500 Building LTE signal boosters. This requires an external antenna and wiring connected to one or more internal antennas. CellAntenna recommends professional installation, but if you’re handy with that sort of thing you can buy the kit from them for prices ranging between $495 for one indoor antenna to $705 if you want four indoor antennas. The CAE500 will boost both Verizon and AT&T LTE signals.

Jan in in Leonore, Illinois asked: “I have tried to get through by phone but no luck. I absolutely cannot get pictures taken with my Motorola Milestone X2 onto my mini card. What am I not setting correctly? Thanks much. Love your show!”

If you want the photos that you take with your phone to be stored on your memory card instead of on your phone’s internal memory, open your camera app, then touch the menu button (in case you don’t know, it’s the one that has 4 small squares, on your particular phone), then select settings and you’ll have an option for “Storage location” just select the card instead of “internal storage”.

If what you want is to move the pictures already taken from the phone to the card, since you have a Motorola phone, it should come with an app called Files. Open the app, select the pictures you want to move, and then select move to SD card.

Delaney in Vicksburg, Mississippi asked: “Is there any type of CD adapter available on the market that you could plug into your CD player that you can plug into your MP3 player or smartphone and hear the audio in your car, the same way you can with a cassette adapter?”

As far as we know there’s no direct MP3 to CD adapter you can use in your car. What you can do instead is look at FM transmitters, if you have a good clear frequency you should be able to plug one into your MP3 player’s headphone jack and transmit your music wirelessly to your car radio.

All you have to do is tune your radio to the same frequency as your FM transmitter and your music should be playing.

The effectiveness of the transmitter depends on how crowded FM bands are where you live, if you can find a frequency that’s not too close to the ones used by the bigger radio stations you should be able to use an FM transmitter well enough, but if most FM frequencies are taken then you may get a lot of interference.

IFA History Feature

“IFA History Feature” brought to you by Messe-Berlin

The DVD was a huge success with growth rates even higher than the CD after its introduction, but it was a replay medium only. It took several years until 1999 when, at the International Funkausstellung in Berlin, Panasonic presented the first DVD recorder prototype. In 2001 the first DVD recorder was market ready and premiered at IFA. One year later these recorders were already being sold in big numbers. At IFA 2003 the first DVD recorder with built-in hard disk had its world premiere.

Rob in Texhoma, Oklahoma listening via TuneIn asked: “I’m having problems not getting video from YouTube using iPhone to TV with an Apple digital AV adapter. Only sound plays.I get video and picture that I have taken just fine. Help please.”

It sounds like you may have the wrong adapter for your phone. Not all phones use the same adapters, some are meant to be used with iPad 2 or 3 and the iPhone 4S, so they will only output audio when used with other phones or iPads or even do nothing at all.

We can’t tell you for sure if you need a different AV adapter without knowing what phone and adapter you’re using now, but that’s the most likely reason, and unfortunately settings won’t change that, you’ll need a new one.

If you bought the adapter from Apple recently they’ll likely take it back or replace it for the right one, if you bought it from someone else, check, they still might.

Glen in Bowling Green, Kentucky asked: “Are there viruses that attack iPhones? What about the phones that use the Android market or whatever? Is there antivirus for them?”

There’s not much malware for iPhones or Android phones that you really have to worry about these days.

There are antiviruses for Android, not for iOS, but the truth is that both iOS and Android isolate their apps in a way that a malicious app cannot infect another app, so antivirus scans are less important than they are on computers, it’s not about finding every file that’s infected, but about finding the one app that may have malicious intent.

So far, there aren’t any huge threats for you to worry about, just read reviews, make sure the app doesn’t seem to be causing trouble for anyone else and you should be fine.
