“This Week in Tech History” Weekly Feature with Chris Graveline

Jim told us: “I have a laptop running Windows XP. It’s about 6 years old, and over that time there have been many, many updates, all of which are stored on my hard drive. Can those old downloaded updates be deleted or move to an external hard drive to clear up space on my “C:” drive.”

You can always go to the Control Panel and Add/Remove programs and delete any updates that you don’t want, but keep in mind that those updates exist for a reason and that reason, more often than not, is security patches.

Deleting updates may open you up to security and stability issues that you don’t want to have. If it’s at all possible, you should probably look into other ways of freeing up space.

Do you have a lot of movies?  a lot of music? a lot of pictures? media files take up an awful lot of room and moving them to an external hard drive won’t open you up to any threats like deleting updates could.
