HOUR 2:

Tech News & Commentary

“This Week in Tech History” Weekly Feature with Chris Graveline

Vince in Albuquerque, New Mexico listening to KIVA asked: “Would like to know the differences between the BlackBerry Bold and the Omnia 2. Would like to know which one would be the best one for speed and that kind of stuff.”

The BlackBerry Bold and the Samsung Omnia II are certainly spawned in some very different oceans. Since the Omnia II is typically on the Verizon network, unless you buy an unlocked one, we’ll compare it with the Bold 9650, as that’s the current model Verizon offers.

The big plus for the BlackBerry is going to be its physical keyboard. If you’re someone who has to click keys in order to type fast, you’ll then want to stop right there and get the BlackBerry. The BlackBerry also integrates with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which is used by a lot of corporations. If your workplace is connected with BES, as it is called, then again, the decision is made for you.

The Omnia II is a Windows Mobile device, running version 6.5 of that OS. You should know that pictures of a new Omnia 7, which is essentially the same phone running Windows Mobile 7, have leaked.

Billy in New Iberia, Louisiana listening on XM Ch. 139 asked: “I’d like to know about the new Blackberry Torch. Is it worth me getting rid of my iPhone? I’ve always preferred the Blackberry, but have always preferred the apps on the iPhone.”

The general wisdom on the Torch is this. If you’re a BlackBerry user who was considering jumping ship to the iPhone in order to get the touch screen and better browser, then the Torch is enough to make you stay. But it’s not expected that many iPhone users will drop that platform to come to the Torch.

The Torch has a slide out physical keyboard, something the iPhone does not. But in virtually every other respect, comparisons to the iPhone leave the Torch looking like last year’s iPhone. The screen is not as big, nor as high resolution, the camera’s not as good, nor is there a front facing one for video chats. The iPhone has far more apps than the Torch. The iPhone is also faster than the Torch and has more memory. The Torch is likely to have better battery life, however.

So, if when you say you preferred the BlackBerry, you mean that you really, really liked a physical keyboard, then you should go and check out the Torch. But if you don’t miss the physical keyboard all that much, frankly the Torch comes up short.

The “Into Tomorrow” team asked the following question about the movie “The Social Network”: “The Social Network” Movie Discussion — Did it change your mind about Facebook? What does social networking mean to you? How has it changed your life — good or bad?
