Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss a scam email, national register to vote day, iPhones’ durability, Facebook departures, and more.

Nancy in Gilmer, Texas listens on News-Weather-Talk KTBB 97.5 FM asked: “My eyes are crossing from viewing countless YouTube reviews and reading about wireless outdoor security camera systems. I don’t want battery powered, or one that relies on iCloud. I already have electrical outlets in place, so that is not an issue. I’ve researched many systems only to find out that they require running wires all over the house, use battery, or must use iCloud. Do you have any recommendations for systems that meet my criteria?”

Nancy, the cloud you’re hearing about is not iCloud but their own “clouds,” it’s just a way of saying they’ll store your recording online and you can retrieve them from there if necessary.

You don’t need any other equipment than the camera

The main advantage of that for you is that you don’t need any other equipment than the camera at home and you can still store your security “tapes”. The advantage for them is that they’ll probably offer plans with more or longer storage for a price.

In your case, what you seem to be looking for is just a WiFi camera system with a DVR, and those are easy and relatively inexpensive to find these days.

For example, you can find a 4 camera wireless system with 1TB DVR by ZOSI online for $200.

Or a Defender 4 high definition camera system with a 1TB DVR for $380.

If you don’t mind generics, you can even find 8-camera systems for close to $150.

On the other end of the spectrum you have systems from companies like FLIR for many thousands, but most people stay in the less expensive side of the spectrum with good results.
