Does It Make Sense To Pre-Purchase USB Type-C Cables?

Mike in Alberta, Canada asked us about Type-C USB

USB Type C

Mike asked: “I’m curious about the new Micro USB C that apparently is going to be the new standard for future devices. Should I buy these cords now and get an adaptor if they’re available for my current devices, or is this something I should hold off on.”

Mike, you can get the cables now, but… why would you?

Your current devices don’t need them, and we assume they’re being powered somehow, so you probably already have the cables you need so, why get USB-C connectors?

There’s really no advantage to getting a Type-C cable and a converter if you don’t have the devices that can use them.

You also have another problem to consider, what are you plugging this cables into? Do you have any Type-C chargers? Or computers with Type-C ports? Otherwise you’re just going to end up with a cable with a Type-A in one end (a regular large USB plug), and a Micro-C on the other end.

There’s really no advantage to getting a Type-C cable and a converter if you don’t have the devices that can use them. And who knows if your next batch of tech devices will even need them, you might still be using your current cables for one more generation.

Don’t worry about Type-C connectors for now, just use what you need and when the time comes you can either buy the cables or use the opposite version of the adapter you mentioned with your current cables.
