Speeding Up An Aging Computer

Sheikh in Santa Clara California asked us about speeding up his computer

Computer Ports

Sheikh asked: “I have a Pavilion Desktop computer and it’s very slow. What can I do to make it faster?”

Sheikh, if you’re serious about improving its performance, your best bet software-wise is probably to reinstall the operating system and start from scratch.

Obviously, that may not be an option for you, so you may benefit from removing anything you don’t need and from running a system optimization software. We’ve used Iolo’s System Mechanic at our studios for years and it seems to help keep our computers working well.

If you’re willing to spend some money, an SSD will do wonders for a computer, suddenly every data access and every program launch will be nearly instant. SSDs are much, much faster than traditional hard drives and you will definitely notice the difference.

Adding RAM will help too, and you will notice too. Unless you have very little RAM, an SSD may make a more noticeable difference, but don’t underestimate RAM, adding memory is a great upgrade.
