Dave asked: “I use the app called “Keep.” What can I do to prevent from losing the data that Keep has kept?”
Dave, the information you “kept” in Keep is backed up by default.
Keep is a Google product. You may be using it on a computer or a phone, but much like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, and every other Google service it’s really web-based.
Anything you add to your Keep is synced to Google’s servers, so if anything were to happen to whatever device you’re using Keep on, you can log-in on a replacement device and find all your data there, or you can even just use a browser and go to keep.google.com from any device.
Needless to say, Google doesn’t see a reason to let you backup your data easily, but you can back it up, just not from within the app.
If you want to download your notes as an HTML file, you can go to takeout.google.com, select Keep and download an archive of your data.
You probably won’t need it, Google obviously backs up, but if you want the added peace of mind, that should get you what you need.
Good tip on takeout.google.com. I would be wary however. Google typically creates undelete options, but Google Keep seems to be missing that feature. Ironic given the product name!
So, would recommend you create something on Keep, click remove on the note, or simply delete all the text content, and see if you can get it back. I wouldn’t rely on “Google obviously backs up”, although I’m a Google fan I’d recommend using another product or doing regular back ups depending on how important the data is.
It’s not too hard to lose a lot of your work with Google Keep, and some Googling has shown me that it has happened to many others. Here’s what happened to me:
I have a note that I periodically add to when ideas related to a book I’m planning strike me. Today, while trying adding something, I accidentally selected all the text (on an Android tablet) and hit the delete button (on the virtual keyboard).
Undo was not available. All the text is gone with no way to recover it.
Happened to me, too. Infuriating, but also a gift of opportunity to realize a possibility in need of a solution to prevent it from happening again.
Make a copy, then archive it, if you have a very important document.
