Tech News and Commentary
Dave and the team discuss the government no longer selling Chinese phones, Qualcomm’s new chip, Hulu’s growing subscriber count, a robot assembling an Ikea chair, and more.
Marianne in Ontario Canada listens on AM800 CKLW – “The Information Station.” and asked: “I’m looking to purchase a new laptop and would like suggestions.”
Marianne, the world of laptops is so vast, that without knowing what you’re going to be doing with it first, there’s really no way to tell what laptop would be best for you.
To give you an idea, for $1500 you can buy a Surface Book, a very well reviewed laptop built by Microsoft that should please fairly demanding users as long as they’re not hardcore gamers. If you have $150 you can walk into Walmart and buy an iView Maximus 3 and still have $20 to pay for an Uber home. That $150 iView will probably run about as well as you could reasonably expect a $150 laptop to run, but it may be enough for some people, and it comes in pink, if that’s the kind of thing you look for in a laptop.
Now, if you’re willing to spend a little more than $150, you can look into an 18.4” MSI laptop with 64GB of RAM for $5400. Probably insane for most of us, but some gamers are willing to pay that price.
Our point is that asking what laptop to buy is a little like asking what car to get. If you need to crawl over rocks, maybe you should go for a Jeep Wrangler over a Audi A4, if you want to edit videos you probably want to go with a more powerful machine that if you just need something to get you to Facebook.com.
Then again, if you just want to go on Facebook, tablets may come into play too, and we won’t open another can of worms with that possibility.
