Don in Mountain View, California and asked: “Can you recommend or provide any comparison charts and information regarding defragmentation programs that will do that efficiently?”
Don, the first thing that we should mention is that there’s a chance you shouldn’t defrag your drive at all.
If you have an SSD drive you shouldn’t defragment it, it will do nothing to improve performance and it will unnecessarily eat up write cycles.
If you’re running anything other than Windows, you shouldn’t defragment your drive either, both Linux and macOS take care of that for you when necessary and both use file systems that barely need it to begin with. This isn’t a new thing either, Macs have been handling this task in the background when necessary for the better part of 20 years now.
If you’re using Windows, NTFS needs it less than FAT32, but neither one of them is very good at avoiding fragmentation, especially if you work with large files like videos. But frankly, there’s little to gain from using anything but the built in tools that came with your operating system to begin with. Windows comes out of the box with tools that can handle this without and issues and really there’s not much point in paying for anything else.
