Tech News and Commentary
Dave and the team discuss radio surpassing television in a Nielsen study, TikTok and paywalls, T-Mobile buying Mint Mobile, Facebook Messenger in the Facebook App, Muscle Cars and EVs, and more.
Dan in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is participating with the AskDave button at IntoTomorrow.com and asked: I need to initiate home Internet service and I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the options. How fast of a service I need and how many gigabytes I need for an average home. We use our Internet for e-mail, I believe our phone is on our Internet, occasional movie but not big time streamers of movies and video games. It’s just my wife and myself at home and occasionally we have one of our adult sons in the home for about a week at a time. Appreciate any help you can give me.
Dan, based on what you want to do you can probably go for a cheap plan.
If youre able to get as much as 50mbps youll probably be able to stream without any issues unless you want to stream 4K in particular, then a little bit more speed may be helpful.
You probably wont even notice the difference for the rest of what you do. Most people today pay for far faster connections than they actually need, and your requirements are more basic than most.
In terms of gigabytes, you probably dont need to worry about it unless you want to really up your streaming.
For example, Comcast is testing a new 1.2 TB limit for home connections and most people will never know the difference.
Except in households with lots of users or lots of heavy use, data caps are rarely an issue. As long as youre getting something like 500GB to 1 TB youll never need to think about it again unless your usage pattern changes.
