Greg in Manchester, Tennessee asked: I have a friend that let a scammer get on their iPhone 12. I’m trying to remove the scammer stuff on there because they go into their bank account and they had to close the bank account. Should I reset the phone or should I try to find out what kind of apps the scammers put on there so they can look at the phone from a remote location? And if I do reset the phone, will the apps come back from the iCloud or what am I gonna lose on those apps on the iPhone itself?

Greg, resetting the phone seems like a better move in case what they did is less visible than an app. For example, a VPN or an MDM (Mobile Device Management) profile that could be connecting the phone to a server that they control.

The thing is, while iCloud may restore the phone, you probably dont want it to. Restoring the phone may mean restoring whatever was done to it like those possible network settings, or an app configured to give them access to something.

Phones are a lot more locked down than computers and typically an app cannot access other apps data, the exception is if the phone is rooted or jailbroken, then anything goes.

If you have concerns that it may have been jailbroken, deleting apps wont be enough and youre looking at trying to restore it to as close to factory settings as you can.

Remember that accounts dont just live on your phone, so changing your friends passwords everywhere would be a smart move to make sure that they dont gain or retain access to anything.
