Karen asked: “Hi Dave and Team. I have a question about a repeater for our house. Most of the ones we’ve seen plug into an outlet. However we need one that can sit on top of a bookcase. Can you provide us direction? We need one that does 5G and 2.4G. Thanks.”
Karen, you wont find anything that is truly unpowered. WiFi is a very power-intensive protocol, thats why so many smarthome devices that are not constantly plugged in use alternative wireless networks.
That means that being plugged into an outlet is more or less inevitable. There technically are extenders that dont need to be plugged in, but the battery on a device repeating and boosting a signal would not last very long so for the most part the devices that dont need to be plugged in tend to be outdoors devices that instead get powered by a solar panel.
Unfortunately, you wont find any serious WiFi repeaters that dont require power. Your only realistic option may be to just throw it behind a couch or somewhere else that wont be visible and keep it close to an outlet that way.
