Is A Cracked Screen Worth Fixing At Today’s Prices?

Listener Steven in Tyler, TX wants to know whether or not he should spend $200 to fix his phone

Cracked Screen

Steve asked: “I was about 6 months into a contract with my galaxy s5. It got ran over by a vehicle. No insurance. I called about a screen replacement and they quoted me $200. I was wanting your opinion. Get it fixed and hope they don’t find anything else or get a 2015 moto g for about $220 and they have 2 year insurance for $40. I know the specs are not as good as the s5 but it is supposed to be a decent off contract phone. I value your opinion. Thanks Dave, love your show.”

A vehicle ran over your smartphone and all it suffered was a cracked screen? I would be very surprised if that is all the damage the device suffered. The chances are quite good that even after replacing the screen, you’ll have issues with the phone.

A vehicle ran over your smartphone and all it suffered was a cracked screen?

Wasn’t the case of the phone also damaged? That must have been a relatively light vehicle. Anyway, to answer your question, the Moto G, even the latest third generation Moto G, can’t really compare to a Galaxy S5. The S5 has a much better screen, faster processor, better camera, more RAM, more internal storage, more expansion capacity… Well, you get the picture.

So if your S5 is genuinely only suffering from a cracked screen, then spending $200 there instead of $220 on the Moto G should leave you with a better phone. Hope that helps!
