Tech News & Commentary

Mike in Milford, Delaware listens on WXDE 105.9 FM – and is calling via the App asked us: “I’m trying to find the perfect music player for my Smartphone. I’m a huge music fan. I’ve stored over 5,000 songs on the SD card on my HTC M8. I’m looking for something that’s unique and different. I use Rocket Player now.”

Mike, The amount of music players in the Google Play store are endless but if you are looking for “unique and different” we recommend “3” by DoubleTwist. “3” gives users a more visually appealing music player. It stores all your music on a 3D cube, which can be easily maneuvered intotomorrow_logoby sliding left and right to change songs and up and down to change albums. The app is still in beta version, so it will take awhile for it to be the “perfect” player that you are looking for. The app can be found by searching “Cubed Music Player” in the Google Play Store.

Another app worth taking a look at is “N7player Music Player”, it isn’t really different and unique but it is an ideal app for anyone with a big library of music. The app offer very easy browsing based on album and artist.

Luckily both apps are free, and offer a great music player. If you want  a unique and different player, “3” is your best bet, if you want to browse your music library easy and fast, then download “N7player Music Player”.

Perhaps a bit less on the style side but a bit more function would be PlayerPro for Android. Available in both free and paid versions, this music player offers the ability to edit your music tracks, applying effects from its built in library, as well as voice search.

Consumer Reports Feature With James McQueen

Recent TV ads have claimed that new Flips headphones can also double as a high quality speaker system, worthy of getting the party started. Consumer Reports decided to put this claim to the test, and Electronics spokesman James McQueen is here with the results.

The “Into Tomorrow” team discussed the latest apps that they have been playing with recently.

• Chris recommends: Map My Walk, FREE

“I’ve started trying to lose weight, and of course I have to use technology – for more than just listening to music. An app I’ve seen a lot of people using is Map My Run. Well, because I have bad knees, I’m too fat to run at the moment. But I did find it’s little brother – Map My Walk. As the name implies, you can use the phone’s GPS to keep track of the routes you have walked. But you can also share that info with others on social media. With the app, you can also keep track of other workout details, including duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, and route traveled on an interactive map. You can also log the food you’ve eaten which makes this a great tool for helping keep track of calories consumed as well as burned. The app can access the music playlists on your phone so that you can listen to your music while you work out. With either a monthly or year subscription you have access to many other features such as training, heart rate analysis and mobile coaching. The app is free and the subscription runs either 6 bucks a month or 30 bucks a year.” — Chris

• Michael recommends: Timehop, FREE

“What’s a great way to look back at your past, everyday rather than waiting for Throwback Thursday… My app of the week of course..Timehop. Timehop is a throwback app that randomly selects past posts and photos and saves them including their comments from Facebook only. You get to select which photo or post you want to share with everyone from your past on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare and Dropbox Photos. It doesn’t save every post or photo, so don’t get upset when something you remember that happened around the same time a selected item did, but didn’t make the cut, it just wasn’t a selected post that was saved. This app is available for FREE on Apple and Android devices.” — Michael

• Samantha recommends: My Disney Experience, FREE

“Plan and share your vacation details—at home and on the go.” — Samantha

Karina in Miami Lakes, Florida listens online asked us: “I have a new iPad Air that has its own cell phone number and cellular capabilities. Could this be used as a phone as well, to make or receive calls?”

Karina, Unfortunately the iPad Air cannot be used as a phone to make or receive calls. It may have a number assigned to it for billing and tracking purposes, but it uses a dedicated data connection and not voice. However, you can use apps like Skype to make international calls at a low price.

There is one exception, you can make one kind of phone call without downloading any extra apps, you can make FaceTime Audio phone calls to anyone with an iPhone.
