SilentOS
The phone’s most notable feature is its focus on privacy, both personal privacy and enterprise privacy. At the heart of that is Silent Circle’s Android-based SilentOS which features a Security Center that allows the user to set privacy restrictions for individual apps.
The OS also gives users the option to create separate “Spaces” which act as discrete, secure places for personal, business, and even social media data all on the same device.
Total encryption
The Blackphone 2 comes with Silent Phone, the company’s communications app that encrypts phone and video calls, as well as text messages and file attachments.
Silent Circle’s CEO Bill Conner explained the motivation:
Today our privacy is increasingly threatened by governments, businesses and individuals. In addition, the growing number of companies where employees work on their own devices in and out of the office means that it is ever more vital to build smartphones that deliver on privacy. People and enterprises want to take back control of their privacy but too often they don’t know how, or they feel they must compromise too much – that’s why the time is right for Blackphone 2.
