Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss Amazon vs OSHA, CNN Plus, cable companies trying to take on Roku and Apple, NASA tapping private contractors for near Earth communications, AI and cars, Apple Watch Series 6 being fixed for free, Facebook’s physical store, TikTok’s dislike button, virtual stores, and more.

Dean in Idaho Falls, Idaho listens on NewsTalk 107.9 and asked: “I wanna buy a home theater system and want to install it myself. And I didn’t realize it was going to be so difficult.Too many options. And I want to keep the whole system under $5,000. For now, just looking at probably a laser projector and I don’t know much about the audio options but wireless capability would be ideal.”

Dean, $5000 is a good budget, but as with everything else in tech it’s all about choices.

For example, an Epson Pro Cinema LS12000 alone can eat up your entire budget, and you’d need to double your budget to get close to a JVC DLA-NZ7.

You can go for a more reasonable Optoma GT1090HDR projector with 4K resolution, HDR, and good contrast for around $1500.

For around $2000 you can get a refurbished Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS300. Generally speaking though, laser projectors are expensive and will probably eat up the majority of your budget.

When it comes to the audio side the same thing applies.

A Bose lifestyle 650 system will cost you over $4000, but you can get a more reasonable option like for about $400 you can buy a JBL wireless bar which will get you a 5.1 surround system with 510W of power.

If you are looking for more power, you can double what that JBL will get you with a $1500 Shockwafe (with an f) Ultra.

Ultimately, the choices for you will depend on priorities and the size of the room that will be housing all of this tech.
