Tech News and Commentary

Marcus in Bossier City, Louisiana listens on 710 KEEL and asked: “What is the best Android phone for around $200?”

Marcus, $200 is a pretty low price point in the world of $1000+ flagships, but you do have some options.

If you’re looking for a “current” phone, so to speak, as opposed to a phone that was released a little bit ago, you can look at something like a Nokia 4.2.

Nokia has chosen its place and rather than trying to compete in the top tier, it has stuck to budget phones and does them surprisingly well. The 4.2 has a dual-lens 13 MP camera, 32GB of internal storage that can be expanded through an SD card, and runs Android One.

Android One was originally a low end version of Android targeting emerging markets, but over the years it was replaced in that role by Android Go. Now One is somewhere between Go and the Android most of us think of.

Android One has a few great features that add to a phone like this one mainly: 1) Stock UI, it can’t contain bloatware, 2) guaranteed updates for at least 2 years and security updates for at least 3 years.

If you’d prefer a regular Android, there are some former flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S8 that can be found refurbished for less than $200, you will probably not be getting many more updates on a phone like that, but they are solid devices otherwise.

Another good current phone is the Samsung A10e, it has a 3000mAh battery, and a very nice edge to edge screen with thin bezels.

Motorola recently updated its budget G series with a $250 phone which lands just above your $200 line. It’s still worth mentioning because the newest version includes a 3-lens camera, and a 5000 mAh battery that Motorola says will last you for 3 days.

If you don’t mind going $50 over your budget, it may be worth a look.
