Jim in Delaware asked: “I am trying to start a podcast but I can not seem to find any podcast hosting sites that will do it for free. I know Anchor used to do it for free but I don’t think they’re even in existence any more. So any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.”
Jim, Anchor in particular was bought by Spotify who later incorporated it into their services. Theyll host your podcast if you have a streaming subscription with them.
There are still other hosting companies that will offer other limited plans for starting podcasters. Podbean offers a free basic plan for those needing less than 500 MB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth.
Buzzsprout allows you to upload up to two hours of audio a month, but will remove your files after 90 days on the free plan.
If you are willing to pay a small fee there are some options that are paid but still affordable. For example, we use Blubrry for our podcast hosting and their basic plan starts at $10/month if paid annually or $12/month if you stick to month to month and it comes with a website, the possibility of monetizing via an ad network, and unlimited downloads. Thats not too bad for less than the cost of some streaming services these days.
Paid services will usually start making sense pretty quickly if your podcast grows, so if you choose one of the free ones to get started, keep an eye on what their paid plans look like or be ready to move to a better paid service once you start getting listeners.
