Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss Google’s AI photo colorization, Google catching up to Alexa in smarthome connectivity, Panera’s online delivery service, Android P, Apple deleting apps that violate guidelines, and more.

Steven from Wilmington, Delaware listens on WDEL asked: “I moved from one side of Wilmington to the other. I’m by the Amtrak station and there’s a power station nearby. I’ve notice my signal dropping. It’s slow to download anything because I don’t have wi-fi. Should this stuff that’s nearby impact my cell phone? How can I get rid of this?”

Steven, as long as you’re not 3 feet from it, a power station is not likely to interfere much with your cell phone service, certainly not in the way it almost certainly interferes with your AM signal, but you listen to us on FM, so maybe you haven’t noticed.

Moving from one end of town to the other is enough to change your cellular reception, though. Different areas have different numbers of towers and it’s possible that your area is just not very well served by your service provider.

Since you do get some signal and what you need is to improve it, a booster may be for you. These devices can be mounted outside your house for better reception, and an inside unit will inject power and repeat the signal so you get better service.

Look into devices by weBoost and SureCall, both have several models that can improve your coverage, some for not very much money.
