Peter in Wilmington, Delaware asked: “My Dell OptiPlex 7010 runs Windows 10 but I’m told it will not run Windows 11 unless I take it to my local computer store and they do something to it. After which, it will supposedly run Windows 11. What is it that they are going to do to it so it can run Windows 11?”

Peter, that would be a good question to ask whoever referred you to the computer shop because it sounds a little suspicious.

Our best guess is that it may be RAM, Windows 11 minimum specs require more RAM than Windows 10, and thats an upgrade that you could get at a shop.

Windows 10 also requires more storage space, so they could be swapping out your current drive for a larger SSD or HDD, though that seems less likely since you probably had more than the minimum 64GB required already.

Windows 11 also requires a DirectX12 compatible graphics card, since the OptiPlex 7010 is a desktop theres a chance they could be adding one.

Windows 11 is not hugely demanding, the majority of Windows 10 computers could be upgraded to Windows 11, so the changes may be minor, but it may be worth clarifying what they are and whether theyre really necessary and worth the investment before you spend any money.
