Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss crypto coins and billionaires, the Twitter Blue subscription service, new Moon landing delays, cars as digital devices, Vizio getting more money from user data than from TVs, Facebook’s toxicity, Musk harming Tesla’s stock price, and more.

Andy in Atlanta, Georgia listens on AM920 The Answer and is calling in using the App and asked: “What is Google Fi? I keep seeing commercials pop up on my YouTube channel for it. Can you please explain a little more about it?”

Andy, Google Fi is Googles cell phone service.

Originally it was low cost and it relied on always connecting to WiFi and routing calls through WiFi it was available. So basically it was a sort of Google Voice with the ability to fall back to cellular if it had no other choice.

The old Fi used to sell data packages and offer worldwide data, but over time the service developed into basically just a regular

cell phone carrier.

These days unlimited plans cost around $60-$80 a month depending on local taxes. The service still offers internet access in Mexico and Canada, but not in the rest of the world, and it no longer tries to push WiFi at all costs, though it still uses it whenever it can.

Theres no huge advantage or differentiator for Google Fi anymore and it has the big downside of routing all data through Google which doesnt exactly have a sterling reputation when it comes to privacy and data protection.

Since they dont have their own network, Google Fi can connect to different leased networks, so you will probably get decent service if you get it.

Alan in Wilmington, Delaware listens on WDEL and asked: “Is the Dexcom continuous glucose monitor for both type-1 and type-2 diabetes?”

Expert answer provided by Kevin Sayer, President, Chairman and CEO of Dexcom.
