Hans in Tyler, Texas listens on KTBB and asked: “Everything in my house is Apple. I have Mac, iPhone, AppleTV. I only have a mobile hotspot and I tried to stream using screen mirroring to watch a movie, and the movie will only play with the phone upright. When I try t turn the phone and go full-screen, everything goes black. This has ben going on for a while. Also, sometimes I have trouble pairing my iPhone with my AppleTV.”

Hans, that sounds like an app restriction or bug.

Some apps actively block mirroring of movies. For example, Netflix will let you browse movies in portrait mode while mirroring to a TV, but as soon as the movie starts playing in landscape mode and full screen youll get a popup that reads Please use Netflix app on your TV.

There are other apps that have similar restrictions but may, for example, just show a blank screen on the TV and allow the audio to play.

Theres not much you can do in those cases other than see if the apps have an Apple TV variant that the apps maker is happy to let you use in place of mirroring.

The pairing issue is not surprising to us, whats surprising is that its been working normally without a router! Usually that causes issues, so your hotspot must be doing some kind of basic routing. The most likely solution is to refresh the network addresses of both devices in settings when they cant see each other.

The first one wed check is the Apple TV. Its built to assume an active network connection 99% of the time, so it may be the slowest one to refresh its network when the connection is lost.
