Ivan asked: “I swore to myself that once I finished my Blu-ray collection, that whatever was next – I wasn’t going to go for. Now that 4K Blu-ray is becoming the norm, is the quality worth the price you pay?”
Ivan, the first thing to consider is, do you even have a TV that can play 4K content?
If you do not, then the price of replacing your whole collection gets even more expensive. Without a 4K capable set, you won’t see any difference at all.
Assuming you do and you want to use it, we’d encourage you to buy new movies in 4K, but as for replacing your whole collection… well, maybe not.
It’s not the same difference we saw between standard def and high def. 4K looks better, the images feel like they have a little more depth to them, but you may not want to replace a very large collection if you haven’t seen the difference yourself and decide it’s worth it.
Also keep in mind that we’ve been seeing 8K sets at trade shows for a while. LG was showing off 8K at IFA in Berlin years ago, we saw generic 8K sets in Las Vegas this year, it’s clear that manufacturers are interested in replacing 4K with 8K at some point.
If you’re not sure you want to replace your whole collection with 4K versions, you may want to wait and see what happens with that first.
Now, if your collection numbers 3 movies, sure, knock yourself out. If it’s a big investment though… Maybe wait and see what happens with 8K.
