Don in Wilmington, Delaware listens on WDEL and asked: “I have an older model DISH Network DVR and I am thinking about upgrading to the newer Hopper system. But I use some external hard drives to expand my memory for recording movies and TV shows. I know you have to format the new hard drives when you plug them into the DVR. If I upgrade to the Hopper system, will I lose all my recording from the hard drives if I plug them into the Hopper system, which I assume will have to re-format the drives to use with the Hopper?”
Don, yes unfortunately you will most likely lose your recordings.
The Hopper will try to format your drives and even if it didnt it would almost certainly store recordings in a different format.
Unfortunately, this is one of those you dont buy the media youre just licensed to use it situations.
Your recordings are basically long term rentals and if you switch devices you will almost certainly lose them.
There arent good ways to get around that either, you cant legally transfer them and theyre typically encrypted, so you cant easily illegally play them.
You will have to choose between your old recording and a new DVR.
